Jessica Thompson is grateful she
realized her passion for creation at a tender age and this purpose
has held her as a willing captive ever since. She made her very
first book with the help of her wise Aunt Ruth at the age of six
years old and the joy of painting paired with the freedom of the
written word took possession of her life. Thompson’s enthusiasm
has wide range, as do her weapons of choice. Relying heavily on
acrylic paint, she embraces variety in the form of water colour
and oil as well. Her experience with collage and her obsession
with object salvation reveal her resourcefulness in displaying
the emotions of her painted earth. Born, raised and supported
in Winnipeg, Manitoba she is a keen observer of her world’s
ever changing landscapes and her society’s obscured reality.
With relentless fervour Thompson bends the rules of colour, dimension
and scale in an attempt to challenge her viewers’ perceptions
of themselves and their relationship with the nature around them.

| Art, to me, is the
beauty and the repulsion of the world on display but more importantly
it is the reaction of the viewer that reveals the work’s
true purpose. With my art I hope to test the perceptions of our
relationships with each other and our natural world. We, the human
race, all feel so deeply it scares us to acknowledge it. That
will be the death of us, our inability to recognize ourselves
in others and express our genuine thoughts in return. I hope my
work can be one of many forms of deeper connection.
For as long as I can remember I have
used the power of word to express myself. My works of poetry,
fiction and reflection directly influence my visual art. Many
of my pieces are tied together by personal conclusions, by life
lessons learned and by character formed. My works of the written
word are often the first and perhaps most vital step of a piece.
For me without one form of art there would not be the other, they
are interdependent, connected and therefore they are all the more
sincere.
I play, experiment and craft art in
the comfort of my home for my sanity and to fulfill an undeniable
compulsion. I have learned from every project and piece, both
those pieces accomplished and those pieces gone awry. I utilize
a wide selection of materials for my pieces as I like to display
the potential in all things. Although I can’t help but display
my love of acrylic paint, often mixed with water colour or oil
for my base to build upon. The intent, emotion and message of
each piece I set out to create determine what materials I will
ultimately end up using to complete it.
